CEBIOR

The Center for Biomedical Research (CEBIOR) has been established in 1999 as a biotechnology laboratory. Located at Gedung Serba Guna Building 2nd floor, Dr. Soetomo street No.14 Semarang, CEBIOR has became an authoritative institute in Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University (FMDU).
Looking back to the path that past, shows how noteworthy maintain. It has gone through a very long journey and it has definitely not been an  easy one. But regarding all things achieved during the journey shows a faith that there has never, not even once, been disenchantment. And now, CEBIOR stands proud and satisfied for all accomplishments. It is not the end of the journey, but a start of another amazing era for CEBIOR.

Starting from SUDR (Six Universities Development & Rehabilitation) project ADB-loan in 1993, CEBIOR was not even in mind . Initially, the goal of FMDU is only to develop its undergraduate program, especially in Cytogenetics and Immunology. Financial support from SUDR project-ADB-loan was revealed into counterpart formation, collaboration with overseas, native academic consultants and planning a new multipurpose laboratory.  The commencement of SUDR project was a preliminary step for CEBIOR development.

Several obstacles made establishment of CEBIOR fall into a passive state for nearly 6 years, during 1994-1999. The initiative of dr. Soejoto, Sp.KK (K), vice-dean at that time, meant to unite multidisciplinary expertise awoke planning of CEBIOR from its long hibernation. CEBIOR was established in 1999 with the initial name “Medical Biotechnology Laboratory”. Although with a minimum of capital and facilities, the Medical Biotechnology Laboratory was able to survive day by day and year by year.
During nearly 13 years of struggle, the Medical Biotechnology Laboratory had been led by three dedicated people. They are Drs. Damin Soemardjo, Prof.Dr.dr.R. Djokomoeljanto, SpPD-KEMD and the current director, Prof. dr. Sultana MH Faradz, PhD. The name CEBIOR – Center for Biomedical Research was used for the first time in 2007 and replaced the name Medical Biotechnology Laboratory. The name of CEBIOR is determined to be more appropriate with today science development and also to match better with its brand new visions and missions.

CEBIOR research nowadays is focusing on Mental Retardation and Autism, Disorder of Sex Development, Cancer Genetics, Infertility and Reproductive Genetics and DNA Polymorphism in infectious diseases such as DHF as well as Leptospirosis. Other studies in immunology are cytokines and molecular studies on infectious disease as well as effects of some drugs including herbal medicine. Since being appointed in Molecular and Cytogenetics Unit, Prof. dr. Sultana MH Faradz, PhD had led CEBIOR to tremendous development, especially in relation to facilities and collaborations. Cooperation with RUNMC (Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre) Netherlands had made CEBIOR become amazingly better developed than before.

To date, CEBIOR stands with 22 staff from various divisions, 6 technicians and 1 administrative staff Countless research projects have been done, frequent partnerships have been approved. CEBIOR had stated its position strongly nationally. As a center that explores science actively, CEBIOR keeps on pursuing for more developments and achievements in the future.
All of this is dedicated for achieving Research University.
